Days before the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union, Russian authorities moved to close down one of the country's oldest and most influential NGOs, Memorial, the guardian of the memory of Stalin-era repressions. At least 750,000 people were shot dead during the two years of the Great Terror (1937-1938). And more than 18 million people were sent to the Gulag, a network of forced labour camps, where many died of hunger, cold, exhaustion.
